Our goal is to help people find independence, restore their hope and share the love of Jesus Christ with them.
With a week still to go in Give Thanks 2013, Home Sweet Home Ministries has announced that they have surpassed their goal of collecting 1600 turkeys by receiving 2162 turkeys. A majority of the donations were received in the just the last week.
On October 14th, Home Sweet Home Ministries kicked its Give Thanks 2013 drive that asked to support the organization with food and monetary donations for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Turkey collections, community drop locations and the sale of Turkey Cards were the some the ways Home Sweet Home asked the community to share their thankfulness with those in need.
In addition to the turkey donations, Home Sweet Home received over 25,000 pounds of food during Give Thanks and 3,500 pounds of non-perishable items were collected from the community drop locations. Turkey card sales at the Bloomington and Lincoln Mission Mart stores netted over $4,000 in donations, more than twice as much as 2012. Home Sweet Home expanded its outreach in Lincoln this year and money collected in that community as part of Give Thanks was used to support Thanksgiving efforts there.
“We are truly overwhelmed by our communities’ generosity. We would be unable to do what we did this Thanksgiving and beyond without their help.” shares Matt Drat, Development and Community Relations Manager. “And those in need will not diminish after Thanksgiving. We are heading into Christmas, as well the winter months where typically we have a decrease in donations. We are asking everyone to continue their support of Home Sweet Home as the next few months goes by.” Drat adds.
Home Sweet Home Ministries will continue their distribution of Thanksgiving food boxes and turkeys through Wednesday, November 27, 2013. In addition, Thanksgiving Dinner will be served at the Billy Shelper Center at 12:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
